BREIDIS PRESCOTT: "AMIR KHAN...WHEN HE GETS HIT HARD, HE DOESN'T SEEM TO KNOW WHAT TO DO"

By Ben Jacobs | December 20, 2010
BREIDIS PRESCOTT:

"I've moved up in weight and thank God. I've won two fights in a row. I'm working hard and training hard and I'm waiting for Amir Khan to give me a rematch...Amir Khan is a great fighter and I always said he'd beat Maidana, however, Khan, despite being quick and throwing lots of punches, his defense isn't the best.  When he gets hit hard, he doesn't seem to know what to do.  His defense needs work," stated jr. welterweight Breidis Prescott, who talked about his strong desire to challenge for a title by giving Amir Khan an opportunity to avenge his only loss, a first round knockout by Prescott over 2 years ago. Check it out!

BJ: Hi Breidis, how's everything out there in Miami?

BP: Pretty good; just walking around near my house right now.

BJ: Breidis, you're now in the 140-pound division. Tell me about the decision to move up this year. How do you feel right now?

BP: Well, you know, the weight was really starting to affect me at lightweight, so I moved up and now I feel pretty good and I feel strong.  Now, I'm waiting for an opportunity for a title shot.

BJ: That makes sense. A lot of fighters just can't make a certain weight anymore, so they have to move up and often they improve.

BP: Yeah, that's right. I've moved up in weight and thank God. I've won two fights in a row. I'm working hard and training hard and I'm waiting for Amir Khan to give me a rematch.

BJ: I was going to ask you about that. A rematch with Khan has been mentioned by some. Do you think it will happen?

BP: Well, if it were up to me ,it'll happen. You know how it is. It depends on promoters and managers as well, but I'd really like to fight him again and challenge for a title.

BJ: I think it'd be a huge fight here in England as all the fans know you.

BP: Personally, I would prefer to fight Khan in England instead of the United States. As you mentioned, people know me there and I think everyone there deserves to see this fight again.

BJ: I've read comments from fans on internet boxing forums and many say you deserve a second fight with him.

BP: Yeah, I'm waiting for it. He's a champion and it'd be a great opportunity for me.

BJ: What did you think of his fight with Maidana?  I think he's improved a lot with Freddie Roach, but he still seems to be open defensively.

BP: Well, firstly, Amir Khan is a great fighter and I always said he'd beat Maidana, however, Khan, despite being quick and throwing lots of punches, his defense isn't the best.  When he gets hit hard, he doesn't seem to know what to do.  His defense needs work.

BJ: Do you have a date yet for your next fight?

BP: Yes, I'll be fighting on ESPN on the 14th of January here in Florida, but we still don't know who the opponent will be. Going back to Khan, I really hope he shows that he's a true champion and fights me again.

BJ: Do you think that you would have the mental advantage over him in a rematch?

BP: I believe so. Aside from the fact that I'm training very hard, he's always going to have it in his mind that I beat him.

BJ: I recall before the Khan fight, on Sky Sports television over here, they showed one of the reporters seeing you train and afterwards, he commented, "this guy is really strong and he's for real". Before, your name wasn't well known, so they didn't realize what you were all about.

BP: Yeah, I always train hard and give the best of myself in each fight. Unfortunately, I had some weight problems at 135 pounds, but now I feel much stronger and I'm waiting for the opportunity.  It's an interesting division at 140 pounds; not just Amir Khan, but I'd like to fight the others who have title belts.

BJ: Do you have a message that'd you'd like to send to your fans and maybe Amir Khan?

BP: To all my fans, I'd like to say trust that Breidis Prescott is going to win a title. We're working hard and I hope to fight Amir Khan again. One thing I have in mind is that every time I fight, I believe I'm going to win.

BJ: Well Breidis, it's been a pleasure speaking with you. I'd like to wish you a good Christmas and I thank you for your time.

BP: Same to you and just give me a call for any interviews in the future.
