Sources close to the situation have informed us that former undisputed jr. middleweight champion Winky Wright has agreed to face European middleweight champion Matthew Macklin on April 9th at the MGM Grand in Las vegas, Nevada. The bout will co-headline the Golden Boy Promotions card featuring the long-awaited showdown between reigning lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and comebacking future Hall of Famer Erik Morales.
Macklin (28-2, 19KOs), who hasn't lost in the past 4 years, is riding an 11-fight win streak after scoring a 12-round unanimous decision over Ruben Varon last month. On the other hand, Wright (51-5-1, 25KOs), who ironically hasn't won in the past 4 years, last fought in April of 2009 when he lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Paul Williams. Since that time, Wright has had one fight get canceled (a tune-up against Grady Brewer), underwent knee surgery, and has struggled to find anyone willing to give him an opportunity. Although Macklin has been much more active, he has faced a similar dilemma as Wright in his inability to secure a recognizable name to prove himself against. It's a crossroads fight for both fighters, who are hoping to get into the mix for big fights.
