Over the weekend, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya was in the mood to talk boxing, so what better fight to talk about than the one we all want, but can't get? On his official Twitter page, De La Hoya shared his thoughts on a mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, discussing how the fight would play out and the reason why he thinks it has yet to happen. "There is no doubt in my mind mayweather beats paquiao. styles make fights," De La Hoya would write, favoring Mayweather's technical abilities over Pacquiao's speed.
It's an interesting assessment given that De La Hoya has faced both men, looking far more competitive against Mayweather than he did when Pacquiao made him quit on his stool. Nonetheless, styles do make fights and De La Hoya does bring up some valid points. "I respect manny and he is great for our sport but mayweathers style will beat anyone if you don't have a stiff hard fast jab," he explained. There's no doubt Pacquiao will have to utilize a stiff, hard and fast jab against Mayweather, but what De La Hoya fails to realize is that he's been doing just that in all of his recent bouts. Regardless, De La Hoya is entitled to his opinion. Fortunately, he does give credit where credit is due and even De La Hoya realizes who the best fighter in the sport is as he writes, "Pacman is the man and he does deserve to be the best fighter on the planet today."
Of course, you have to wonder just how much of De La Hoya's opinion is influenced by his animosity towards Bob Arum. It's clear that the war between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank won't be ending any time soon, as De La Hoya was not shy about laying the blame squarely on Arum and Top Rank for the mega-fight not already taking place. "I believe they both want to fight each other I feel that right now pac is being squeezed and people are making money off him but once....There are no more heavy bags there will be no choice but to make the fight happen.it's a shame because manny wants it and Floyd wants it," he added.
