JACK MOSLEY: "PACQUIAO AIN'T THE GREATEST...SHANE CAN WIN THIS FIGHT!"

By Percy Crawford | January 20, 2011
JACK MOSLEY:

"Pacquiao ain't the greatest ever, but he's been matched real good. Bob Arum knows how to do a great job with his fighters and I have to give it to him. He knows how to match him up real good (laughing). And he knows how to make his money; keep it all in the family, that's right. So he knows what he's doing. I can't take nothing away from him...Shane had a bad performance against Floyd and he didn't look like he should've looked against Mora, even though I felt he beat him. I thought he beat him, but again, there goes that training thing. I don't think he's being trained the way he should be. I'm not trying to take anything away from Naazim, but he just ain't being trained the way he should be. I don't know what the deal is man, but he needs to have me in there so I can assert myself and he can win this fight. Shane can win this fight," stated Jack Mosley, father and former trainer of "Sugar" Shane Mosley, as he talked about the upcoming May 7 showdown with Manny Pacquiao. You don't want to miss what else he had to say. Check it out!

PC: How have you been doing Jack?

JM: I've been doing great. Everything has been going great!

PC: I saw you out in Vegas for your son's fight against Floyd Mayweather back in May and you're still looking fit and in good shape.

JM: I've been working on myself. I've been taking my health products and exercising to stay in shape. I don't have any bad habits. And habits for me are easy to break, so I don't keep any bad habits.

PC: What did you think of 2010's boxing action? The end of the year seemed to serve all boxing fans well.

JM: I thought they had a lot of great fights. They have a lot of young talent coming up and everybody trying to do their best. The ones without the bad habits are really going to do the best, but you got those ones with bad habits and that makes it hard.

PC: The end of the year was definitely capped off with Sergio Martinez's knockout of Paul Williams. Do you see Williams making a solid comeback after that?

JM: He will be back. He's tall and he can fight in many divisions. I think even though he got knocked out at 160 or so, he can be back. It gets tougher as you start moving up the ladder. It was kind of easy for him at 147, but as he moved up, the competition was starting to be against guys almost his size. Sergio Martinez is not a small guy. He's right there with him and that's the kind of stuff that can happen to you when you fight little bitty guys all of your career. Then you start getting up there and start fighting somebody your size and you have a chance to get knocked out yourself.

PC: Shane finally got the fight he wanted last year and that was to face Mayweather. He never seemed to get it together after that 2nd round. What did you think of his performance on May 1st?

JM: Well, I just think he wasn't trained properly. That's what I think. I don't think he trained enough. He didn't train hard enough and that's just from what I can see. He looked kinda tired. He said he wasn't tired, so what can I say? But everybody else said he looked tired with his mouth all hung open and everything. Maybe it was something else, I don't know, but I just never seen him look like that in his whole boxing career; ever! So I don't know what the hell happened in that one. That wasn't Shane. If that had been the regular Shane out there, that would have never happened. That fight would have been way more competitive than that. It wasn't even competitive.

PC: How tough was it for you to see him defeated so handily knowing there was nothing you can do about it?

JM: Well, it's very tough because I wasn't training him and I'm not training him, but I know what to do with him. Whether he thinks it or not, I know what to do with him. He's my blood and I know what kind of work he needs. Somebody tried to say, "He was overworked." My thing is he was underworked because I don't even think he worked that hard. I don't think he did, but I can't say because I wasn't there, you know what I'm saying? I just know what I seen and that wasn't Shane that had put in hard work. I know what I do with them mitts to make him work, as far as getting him to throw combinations and things. I know how to get stuff done.

PC: Shane will be facing Manny Pacquiao next and a lot of people not only feel like he doesn't deserve the fight, but they are counting him out. I've learned not to count Shane out...

JM: (Cutting in) No, you can't count him out. You can't do that. I think he can win that fight.

PC: Do you see flaws in Pacquiao that will allow Shane to beat him? Because he has been steamrolling people.

JM: Yeah, but I aint gonna mention that on your site because me and Shane done talked about that already.

PC: So without giving away anything, you do see Pacquiao as being beatable?

JM: Heck yeah! Oh yeah! Pacquiao ain't the greatest ever, but he's been matched real good. Bob Arum knows how to do a great job with his fighters and I have to give it to him. He knows how to match him up real good (laughing). And he knows how to make his money; keep it all in the family, that's right. So he knows what he's doing. I can't take nothing away from him. He's doing a great job. I take my hat off to him too because he allowed Shane to get the fight with Pacquiao. That means Bob is doing a great job because he's known Shane since Shane came out of the Olympics. The only reason he didn't work with Shane is because he had Oscar at the time or otherwise, he would've took Shane. He knows how to make that money and he knows how to make things happen and now that him and Oscar are at odds, he allowed Shane to come in there. Shane is not with Oscar anymore and that's the only reason he did it. If Shane was still with Oscar, then Arum wouldn't have done it. It would have been something else.

PC: As a man, Shane did what he had to do to get the fight he wanted. It made no sense to stick around when they weren't trying to make any fights with Arum, who has a couple of potential opponents for Shane.

JM: Yeah, not only that, but Oscar wasn't even trying to get the fight for Shane. He was trying to get it for Manuel Marquez, but shit, he can't beat Shane.

PC: I agree. Once it was announced that Pacquiao's next fight would be at 147, you have to ask yourself who would win a fight at 147 between Mosley and Marquez, and I clearly think Shane beats him at 47.

JM: Heeeell no he [Marquez] ain't gonna beat Shane at 47 and he wouldn't have beat Shane at 35. Shane at 35 would have knocked him out cold. He couldn't beat Shane. Shane had a bad performance against Floyd and he didn't look like he should've looked against Mora, even though I felt he beat him. Shane can win this fight!

PC: I think this is actually going to be a great fight. I know a lot of people are looking at Shane's last two performances, but styles make fights and I don't think Manny is going to be moving as much as Mora did, for sure.

JM: Pacquiao's gonna move around once Shane hits him (laughing). Once he hits him, he gonna start moving. Now Floyd did the other thing. Floyd started grabbing him until he saw that Shane was tired or looked tired; he couldn't do nothing. And then he started doing his Floyd thing. He was happy that Shane was in that state because if he wasn't, Floyd would have been in trouble. He would have been knocked out. He would have been knocked out too, man, shit...there again, I have stuff that I used to make sure Shane can be ready to throw punches at all time, no matter what. He can be tired and he can still throw punches tired; it don't matter because I push him. I can make him finish the job like he did against Mayorga. He was still strong and knocked him out in the last seconds of that fight. That's the way we train.

PC: Before I let you go, what else do you have going on right now Jack?

JM: I got a couple of amateurs. I got 3 amateurs right now. I got a heavyweight that is about 6'5" and weighs about 240. He's coming down from 250 and I'm going to have him at 235 in a minute. I got a lightweight and a 126-pounder.

PC: We need some life in that heavyweight division.

JM: Well, the way I'm training this heavyweight right now, it's going to take me about 6 months to get him to realize that all that I'm showing him is gonna work. I've been training him for about a month now, but I'm pushing him fast. We are working on a whole lot of stuff. He don't have any bad habits that I can see and he's a clean-cut kind of guy. I think the people will love him. He's got a nice personality. Not that he's out there to win a popularity contest, but if it came down to it, he will be okay. I'm working this heavyweight and then I think I will be going into camp with Shane. I think that's a possibility, but I'm waiting to see what's up. I just want to see my son win, you know? I'm not worried about all of the popularity stuff. I just want to see him win.
