Although nothing has been finalized, sources close to the situation have informed us that future Hall of Famer James "Lights Out" Toney could be making his return to the ring in late February against "Dangerous" Damon Reed. Toney, who made his MMA debut inside the Octagon this past August, hasn't been inside a boxing ring since September of 2009, when he scored a 2nd round TKO victory over Matthew Greer. After dates with both Klitschko Brothers fell through, Toney grew increasingly frustrated with his inability to secure fights with the likes of David Haye and Tomasz Adamek. It appears his extended hiatus from the squared circle might finally be coming to an end with the proposed bout against Reed.
Looking to stay busy, Toney hopes to string along however many wins it takes before one of the big boys, or even new heavyweight entrant Antonio Tarver, are finally willing to step up to the plate. Reed, who was last seen being stopped by Hasim Rahman in the 6th round back in August of 2010, has amassed a record of 45-14-0 with 32 knockouts. Although he should be nothing more than a tune up for the future Hall of Famer, he should provide good work for Toney as he waits for a bigger challenger. I'm sure Toney fans will be thrilled to see the talkative Michigan native back in action again.
[WRITER'S NOTE: Again, NO CONTRACTS HAVE BEEN SIGNED for this fight, but stay tuned to FightHype's front page as I'm sure Toney will give it to us as soon as he puts ink to paper.]
