JAMES TONEY: "SHANE CAME TO SURVIVE...YOU CAN'T REALLY FAULT PACQUIAO"

By Percy Crawford | May 11, 2011
JAMES TONEY:

"Aw man, Shane felt that power and went into survival mode. He came out looking okay, but once Pacquiao touched him in the third round, he went into survival mode...it changed his mind a lot. He felt Pacquiao's power and then turned the fight into a track meet...all-time greats don't go out like that. Shane went out like a coward. He has nothing left. It was embarrassing...Pacquiao came to fight...Shane came to survive. You can't really fault Pacquiao for that. He came to fight; Shane wasn't having none of that...when you fight the way he fought, it's time to hang 'em up. I'm telling you, he went out like a coward," stated future Hall of Famer James Toney, who shared his thoughts on last weekends Pacquiao vs. Mosley showdown. Check out what else he had to say about his future plans and more.

PC: JT, I've been getting a lot of emails asking about your possible fight on the Gulf Coast. What's the status of that fight?

JT: Well, it was originally scheduled for May 14th, and then they pushed it back to May 28th, and now it's looking like June because of the weather situation on the Gulf Coast. Fighting to the side, I want to wish all of the families down there my well wishes and I hope everyone is safe and rebuilds rapidly. Hopefully my fight can give the Gulf Coast a boost whenever it goes down, but right now, my thoughts and prayers are with those people. But New Orleans and Mississippi, I am coming; we just don't know when yet because of the weather situation.

PC: That's wassup man. I hope things come together for the surrounding cities so you can come and put on a show.

JT: You know it. I'm heading into the office right now. The gym is my office. I've been putting in work. We may scale back a little bit depending on the situation and the date.

PC: Before I let you get your training in, I wanted to get a quick thought on Pacquiao/Mosley.

JT: Aw man, Shane felt that power and went into survival mode. He came out looking okay, but once Pacquiao touched him in the third round, he went into survival mode.

PC: So you think the knockdown changed his mind a little bit?

JT: Shit, it changed his mind a lot. He felt Pacquiao's power and then turned the fight into a track meet. Shane has looked bad in his last 4 out of 5 fights or so, man. People call him an all-time great, but all-time greats don't go out like that. Shane went out like a coward. He has nothing left. It was embarrassing. Him and Naazim talked all that shit and then went in there to survive.

PC: Some people have been criticizing Manny Pacquiao for maybe carrying Shane or maybe just being a little too friendly in there. What are your thoughts on that?

JT: Pacquiao came to fight...Shane came to survive. You can't really fault Pacquiao for that. He came to fight; Shane wasn't having none of that.

PC: I tell people all of the time that if I ever seen you get beat up, I would be the first one to tell you it may be time to find something else to do. Do you think Shane got beaten up bad enough to where he should be looking to do something else?

JT: Ain't nobody ever beat me up. Have I lost fights before? Yeah, but I ain't never got beat the hell up, and it's not the first time Shane's been beat up, so yeah, I don't think he...when you fight the way he fought, it's time to hang 'em up. I'm telling you, he went out like a coward.

PC: I'm not going to hold you out of the gym my man. Thanks for your time. Is there anything you want to add?

JT: No Mercy, you know as soon as I get the word, you gonna get the scoop. I will keep you posted, for real. Let your people know I'm still coming.
