In light of the recent positive anabolic steroid test results from both world champion Lamont Peterson and former world champion Andre Berto, former heavyweight title challenger Eddie Chambers and his team have approached their promoter [Main Events], who also promotes his June 16th opponent Tomasz Adamek, to request Olympic-style drug testing. Chambers' trainer, James Ali Bashir, reached out to FightHype.com to share the info, stating, "I have requested that Main Events promoters for both Eddie Chambers and Tomasz Adamek implement Olympic style drug testing for their upcoming title fight on June 16th."
In fact, Bashir took it a step further and made the same request to the sanctioning body. "I have made the same request to the IBF for random urine and blood samples, and that's what we, Team Chambers, want," Bashir explained. As in most cases, when a fighter or his team ask for more stringent testing, they simply want to make sure everything is on the up and up. Likewise, Team Chambers wanted to be clear that they are not accusing Tomasz Adamek of any wrongdoing. "We simply want to keep the playing field level in light of all of the recent problems with the Peterson and Berto situations," Bashir stated.
Chambers and Adamek are scheduled to face each other June 16th on the NBC Sports Network at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. It will be the first action Chambers has seen in over a year, while Adamek recently won a unanimous decision over Nagy Aguilera in March on the last NBC Sports Fight Night card. It's recently become a widespread request to ask for more stringent testing in the sport of boxing in an effort to not only even out the playing field, but to also clean up the sport. Whether or not Main Events or the IBF will grant Team Chambers their requests is yet to be seen.
