WBC #1 ranked jr. welterweight contender Ajose Olusegun (30-0 14 KO's) is tired of being bypassed, skipped over, and ignored, and according to his advisor, Damian Ramirez, he's taking action. The undefeated Olusegun has been the mandatory challenger since September of last year, when he defeated Ali Chebah in a WBC title eliminator. Since then, he's patiently waited for his opportunity, forced to watch from the sidelines as former champion Erik Morales lost the title to the fast-rising undefeated Danny Garcia. Naturally, Olusegun assumed that he would finally get his opportunity against the newly-crowned champion, especially when the WBC ordered a purse bid for a proposed matchup between the two fighters.
That hope, however, began to fade away last week when, for reasons unknown, the WBC granted a 2-week extension on the purse bid to Garcia's promoter, Golden Boy Promotions. It wasn't until late yesterday evening when Olusegun received the bad news that Garcia had finalized a deal to defend his WBC title on July 14th against former jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan. Now, Olusegun is taking the fight outside the ring, as he and his team are taking action in hopes of forcing the WBC to adhere to their own rules and strip Garcia of the title.
"We're still working on that with the WBC and I'm confident that Ajose is going to fight for the title and the WBC's not going to let him get screwed. We're on top of that. We're in the middle of discussions right now," stated Olusegun's promoter, Lou DiBella, who kept it short and to the point. "I'm going to make sure he doesn't get screwed and we're working hard on it." Ajose's advisor, Ramirez, had a little bit more to say. "It's not for the title as we're working on the WBC to strip Garcia," Ramirez explained, referring to the recent news that Garcia will be defending his title against Khan on July 14th. "Their by-laws have changed and a unification doesn't take precedent over the mandatory."
