To be honest, he is a good fighter, but I don't think he is as good as everybody thinks he is and I'm going to expose all of that stuff come July 14th...they're trying to make this guy the next big superstar. I don't see a superstar in him though. He's a good fighter, but I don't think he is a superstar type of fighter. July 14th, I am gonna shock the world, man," stated WBC jr. welterweight champion Danny Garcia, who talked about his upcoming July 14th clash with former champion Amir Khan. PC: First and foremost, meeting you in person, I had no clue you were that big. You're like a middleweight.
DG: (Laughing) Yeah, I'm big for my weight, man. I shock a lot of people when they meet me. That was one of the first things I noticed when I was walking around other fighters; like the 154-pounders were smaller than me and I'm like, "Damn, I'm big for my weight." So that's definitely an advantage right there.
PC: The big news of the week is you will be fighting Amir Khan on July 14th. You told me you don't want nothing but big fights. It seems as if things are going your way for sure.
DG: Ah man, it's just crazy. It's like another dream come true, man. This is the fight where I get to show the world that I'm ready to be a champion. I'm just ready to show my skills, man, and it's going to be a big night for me that night.
PC: Obviously Lamont Peterson failed the test and they wanted to keep Khan busy. When did you find out that you were a possible replacement?
DG: I think my manager went straight to Golden Boy and brought my name up and I was the only available guy. I think they been talking about it, but he didn't tell me until like 2 weeks ago. I was the first person they brought up and then a couple of other names were mentioned.
PC: Amir Khan is always in good shape and fights hard. What do you think of him as a fighter?
DG: You know what? He's a good fighter. You don't just become a champion being a regular fighter. He looked good in his last couple of fights, but I feel like he has never been in the ring with a guy like me who can punch, got speed, and who is smart and young just like him. And Khan's got his hands full.
PC: When does camp begin, or have you been doing some maintenance work already?
DG: I'm already in training. I've been in camp for 2 weeks already. But when you get the date, it just turns all the way around and it gets more intense. So I've been in camp already for 2 weeks and when the fight comes off, it will be like a 9-week camp.
PC: You just had a tough fight with Erik Morales, and you knew it would be tough like that, but is Amir Khan your toughest fight to date?
DG: Man, I just think he's going to be another guy in the way that I gotta get out of the way. To be honest, he is a good fighter, but I don't think he is as good as everybody thinks he is and I'm going to expose all of that stuff come July 14th.
PC: I know you were putting on your Facebook page that you felt he was overrated.
DG: I guess they're trying to make this guy the next big superstar. I don't see a superstar in him though. He's a good fighter, but I don't think he is a superstar type of fighter. July 14th, I am gonna shock the world, man. I can't really even say much because I'm going to let my hands talk.
PC: Will you be open to doing random blood and urine testing for this fight against Khan?
DG: I mean, I'm open for whatever, man; whatever it is. I will find out more tonight and have more information, but if that's what he wants to do, we can do it.
PC: I had to get a word with you my man. I appreciate it. I can tell your anxious already. Is there anything else you want to say?
DG: July 14th, Danny "Swift" Garcia is going to shock the world and show the world that he is a true champion and I take on any fight. I don't care who or where. I'm doing it like they did it in the old days where the best fighters fought the best; when Hagler fought Duran and Duran fought Sugar Ray Leonard. I'm taking it back to the old school days where the best fight the best and giving the fans the best fight, and July 14th is going to be epic.
