RUSLAN PROVODNIKOV HOPES TO BECOME A REGULAR ATTRACTION AT BARCLAYS CENTER

Last week, Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2) and Chris Algieri (19-0) got a chance to talk to members of the media at a press luncheon held in the Brighton Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn. The two had previously appeared at a press conference at the Barclays Center, where they will face off in a battle for Provodnikov's light welterweight title on June 14. It seemed fitting to bring the Provodnikov to Brighton Beach, a neighborhood known for its large Russian population. He seemed comfortable speaking to a room full of his fellow countrymen and women, many times taking questions without the use of his translator.

The fight was originally scheduled to be held at Nassau Coliseum, located in Algieri's home of Long Island. However, when Mikhail Prokhorov, Russian owner of the Brooklyn Nets (who play their home games at the Barclays), heard that Provodnikov would be in town, it is said that he had something to do with the venue changing. What exactly his role was in the move remains unknown, but Provodnikov made sure to extend his thanks in addressing the media in Brighton Beach.

Provodnikov, who is no stranger to fighting stateside, is excited about the prospect of longevity at the Barclays center. When asked about his comfort level fighting in New York among the large Russian population in the city and surrounding areas, he said, "I think this will be like a stage fightÂ… a sample fight to see. It is my first fight in New York. I want to see how it will go and what kind of attention I will get, how the fans will treat me and support me. I hope everyone comes out to supportÂ…. I hope to come back again and again and fight at the Barclays center again."

If this event is successful numbers wise, the plan will likely be for the Barclays Center to become a second home for the "Russian Rocky", just as Madison Square Garden has been to fighters like Miguel Cotto and Tito Trinidad. It's an idea that Provodnikov likes. "Definitely I would want that. It would be a great honor to get attached to the Barclays Center, maybe one day I can be the only fighter who fights at The Barclays Center," he added.
