JAMES DE LA ROSA: "I'VE BEEN WORKING ON EVERYTHING...WATCH OUT FOR ME ON AUGUST 2ND"

By Percy Crawford | July 22, 2014
JAMES DE LA ROSA:

"I've been working on everything that I felt I needed to work on; things that I saw in my last fight that I felt I didn't do right. I worked on a lot of things that I felt I needed to and it will show on August 2nd... Watch out for me on August 2nd and if the Charlo brothers want to do it, let's make it happen," stated jr. middleweight contender James De La Rosa, who talked about his upcoming August 2 return to the ring and much more. Check it out!

PC: I'm sure you are ready to get back in there on August 2nd and erase that decision loss in your last fight.

JDLR: Yeah, it was a little minor setback. I had some problems going in. I shouldn't have let it bother me, but I did; I lost. I thought I won, but it was still a good fight. I felt it could have gone either way. I felt I had a slight edge, but it is what it is. There is nothing I can do about it. I'm not a judge.

PC: Probably worked out best because you were sanctioned afterward for a positive test, so it would have been changed to a no contest anyway.

JDLR: Yeah, I tested positive for taking a diuretic. That was a stupid mistake on my side. I had about a pound to go and I was already drained and tired from cutting weight and I just figured that was the easiest way to make weight. It was something that I done that I shouldn't have done.

PC: Is that something that just happens and you learn from it?

JDLR: That's definitely something I learned from and I have put it behind me. It is what it is, it happened, I made a mistake, and I'm about to show everyone what time it is now.

PC: Tell us about your August 2nd fight in Texas. You have dealt with some lengthy layoffs. What are you looking to showcase?

JDLR: I been staying in the gym still and staying sharp with a little bit of sparring here and there. I'm expecting ring rust, but I will be good. It's gonna be a good show and I'm gonna go out there and do what I gotta do to get that win so I can keep going forward with my career from there.

PC: Did you ever get a little discouraged being stuck in the contract with Don King and not fighting?

JDLR: In the beginning, when I thought it was over and it wasn't, I got a little discouraged. I wouldn't train because I knew I wouldn't have anything coming up. But now I grew up and I figured if this is what I'm gonna do, I might as well stay in the gym and be ready at all times. If someone calls, I'm gonna stay ready and on my toes and be ready to fight at all times.

PC: Now that you are with Adrian Clark and his AC Sports Management, what's your situation with DKP?

JDLR: I'm still not out of my contract. I will be in August and I'm done, but Adrian was a good move for me. He's really helped me out a lot and we are in touch just about every day checking up on me and seeing how I'm doing and seeing how training is going. It's been a real good move for me.

PC: What have you been working on in the gym during this year long layoff?

JDLR: I've been working on everything that I felt I needed to work on; things that I saw in my last fight that I felt I didn't do right. I worked on a lot of things that I felt I needed to and it will show on August 2nd.

PC: What did you learn most about yourself or the sport of boxing during the last few years going through the promotional problems?

JDLR: I just took time off and I was thinking to myself about the boxing game and if I'm gonna do it, I had to stay committed to it and stay on my training. It helped me a lot because my wife and kid look up to me and I have kids out here in my hometown that look up to me, so it made me realize if this is what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna have to stay on it 24/7 and that's what I been doing. I've been on it.

PC: The junior middleweight division is a hot division right now. Are you staying there or have you outgrown the division?

JDLR: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that was a just a slip up. I can definitely still make the division and I'm about to make a name there. I'm willing to fight anybody. If they give me the notice and I have time, I'm ready. I'll fight anybody at 154; don't matter who it is.

PC: I heard you want a brothers vs. brothers event with you and your brother Juan to fight the Charlo Brothers on the same bill. Is that the case?

JDLR: Oh, most definitely. A lot of people talk about the Charlo brothers. Me and my brother have been known before them. He did the TV show before they were around. A lot of people are big on them, but a lot of people knew us before they even turned pro. If that's something that the Charlo brothers' handlers  is interested in, we would be more than happy to make it somewhere here in Texas. It could be in San Antonio.

PC: That would probably be a first. I would have to look it up, but I never heard of two sets of brothers fighting another set on the same bill.

JDLR: Brothers vs. Brothers would be a big deal and I'm sure they have a big following in Texas. We have a good following here, so it's a phone call away for them. That's all they gotta do is call us and we are more than willing to take on the brothers.

PC: I wish you the best in August and hopefully you and your brother can get the fights with the Charlo's. Is there anything else you want to add?

JDLR: Watch out for me on August 2nd and if the Charlo brothers want to do it, let's make it happen.
