"It's two of the bigger names in the division. It's a fight that both fighters need and it's a fight that I think the fans want to see. We're definitely gearing up for it. I know Amir's going to be ready, so I think it's a great fight...He's a lot better fighter since getting with Virgil and we're going to have to adjust to what I'm seeing now as opposed to what I saw in the past. I think he's a better fighter now. I think we're getting the best Amir Khan there is. We'll be fighting the best Amir Khan on December the 13th," stated world-class trainer Kevin Cunningham, who talked about a December 13 showdown between his fighter, former welterweight champion Devon Alexander, and former jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan. Check out what else he had to say!
BT: What's up, Kevin? I had to call and find out if the rumors are true. I hear you guys are getting that Amir Khan fight that slipped through your fingers.
KC: Well, it looks like it. I'm hearing rumors just like everybody else. We haven't actually signed, but that's what I'm hearing.
BT: I take it that's a fight that you like a lot considering that you guys were already supposed to fight in December of last year.
KC: Yeah, I think it's a great matchup. It's two of the bigger names in the division. It's a fight that both fighters need and it's a fight that I think the fans want to see. We're definitely gearing up for it. I know Amir's going to be ready, so I think it's a great fight.
BT: When you guys were supposed to fight last year, Amir pulled out because he thought he was going to get the Floyd fight in May. Obviously, that didn't happen. Do you think the winner of the fight now puts themselves in line to face Floyd next?
KC: Oh, definitely. I think the winner of this fight deserves a mega-fight, whether it be Mayweather or Pacquiao. I think the winner of this fight deserves one of those guys. Like I said, it's two of the more well-known welterweights in the division and two of the most highly-skilled guys out there. I mean, both guys have fought all the top guys out there, so I think definitely the winner of this fight deserves Mayweather or Pacquiao.
BT: I'm sure you probably did a lot of scouting on Amir already when you thought you would be facing him last year. Now that he's got a year with Virgil Hunter under his belt, how much do you think Amir has changed since then and now?
KC: I mean, I've seen him fight throughout the years and I did my homework on Amir. I think that he's changed for the better, being with one of the best trainers out there in Virgil Hunter. He's a lot better fighter since getting with Virgil and we're going to have to adjust to what I'm seeing now as opposed to what I saw in the past. I think he's a better fighter now. I think we're getting the best Amir Khan there is. We'll be fighting the best Amir Khan on December the 13th.
BT: Is there any concern that the clash of styles between Amir and Devon could potentially lead to an "ugly" fight, similar to what happened when you guys fought Tim Bradley?
KC: I don't think so. I think both fighters, Devon and Amir, are high-volume punchers. They throw a lot of punches and are both busy, so when both guys are letting their hands fly, I mean, that calls for an exciting fight I believe.
BT: With a potential Mayweather fight on the line, what kind of performance can fans expect on December 13th? Do you think either fighter is going to have to really make a statement or is getting the W all that matters?
KC: The most important thing is getting the win. I mean, the winner of this fight catapults himself into a great situation, whether it's Mayweather or not. It's still a huge win for either fighter, so that's what we're focused on.
