MICKEY BEY: "ONCE I GET HEALTHY, IT'S A WRAP…I'LL BRING THE ACTION NEXT TIME"

By Percy Crawford | October 22, 2014
MICKEY BEY:

"I haven't heard anything yet, but as far as that goes, I heard him whining about it of course, but he gotta realize he got beat with one hand. With two, the fight wouldn't even be close. That's a fight that people are not interested in seeing in the first place. Like I said, it's just on to the next one nowÂ…Once I get healthy, it's a wrap and that's all I gotta sayÂ…of course it wasn't the most entertaining fight, but when you go into a fight handicapped, it ain't much you can do. I'll bring the action next time," stated lightweight champion Mickey Bey, who gave us an update on the recent surgery he had on his hand, his future plans, and much more. Check it out!

PC: First and foremost, how is the hand doing?

MB: The surgery went good. It didn't take too long. It was cool and I'm glad I got it out of the way. I was supposed to been get it done, but I had to get it done either way. I had to get it done, so now maybe I can fight with two hands instead of one.

PC: Floyd Sr. told my partner that he didn't feel like we have seen the best Mickey Bey yet. Do you feel that is accurate based on your hand situation?

MB: Oh, for sure, without a doubt. That's what people don't understand. I don't know many fighters that would beat the fighter that I beat. Winning the title period would have been good, but to beat a guy like Vazquez, it took a lot of mental strength to know that you're going in handicapped. I blocked it all out and did what I had to do and got the win, pretty or ugly. I went in with one hand and now I'm a world champion now, so that's all that matters.

PC: Now that you have the title in your possession, has it hit you yet or is it still new to you?

MB: I felt it was long overdue, so nothing has really changed. I just look at it like, I'm gonna let this hand heal up and then on to the next thing. I'm only going up from here.

PC: How long are you out until you can go back to the gym and start doing some movements in there?

MB: I probably can start working out pretty soon in a couple of weeks, but I ain't sure yet about making contact. I'm gonna make sure I'm all the way right before I do that, but it shouldn't be long. I don't think it will be too long. Hopefully it will be real soon. I definitely wanna be back in the ring early next year.

PC: As busy as you like to stay in the gym, what have you been doing during this down time?

MB: Really man, just chilling and resting. I'm probably gonna go back to my hometown in Ohio and see the family,, but other than that, I've just been chilling out. I still gotta be careful with my hand as far as everyday activity too, so I've been staying indoors and chilling out. Even if you run or jog, your hands are swinging, so I can't even really do that or treadmill stuff yet. I gotta watch all of that to make sure the blood flow don't make my hand swell up. But I can't wait until I can get back to working out, even if that's just being in the gym working out minus the sparring and stuff.

PC: Have you heard anything on your next move? I know Miguel Vazquez exercised his rematch clause.

MB: I haven't heard anything yet, but as far as that goes, I heard him whining about it of course, but he gotta realize he got beat with one hand. With two, the fight wouldn't even be close. That's a fight that people are not interested in seeing in the first place. Like I said, it's just on to the next one now.

PC: The cliché is, you're not really a champion until you defend it once. Do you have that mentality or is that just a cliché term to you?

MB: I just think that's cliché. People make slogans like that up. I can see if I won an easy belt, but he was ranked #1, he never lost at lightweight, and he was a real good fighter. Most people don't have to fight a fighter that good to win their first belt. I went in there and not only won it, but I did it with a handicap. I deserve it, so I don't feel like that at all.

PC: What can we expect from Mickey Bey in 2015?

MB: You can expect some huge things coming from me. You can expect some great performances once I get healthy. You can expect some of the best performances in the sport. I'm gonna be ready to put some real good performances on.

PC: Terence Crawford and Ray Beltran are about to scrap in a big lightweight fight. Who do you like in that one?

MB: I lean towards Terence. Dude is a good fighter. And I'm not judging by how many times Beltran lost because that don't matter, but Terence will beat him. I think dude can fight good enough to make it a match, but I don't see him winning. He shouldn't threaten Terence as far as winning or anything.

PC: Demarcus Corley told me he would love to fight you. What are your thoughts on the call out from "Chop Chop?"

MB: Ah man (laughing), I don't even have to comment on that. I got a big smile on my face right now. Of course he would want too. Everybody want to fight and get good paydays, but his time came and went. His time is up. People gotta know when their time is up and his is up.

PC: Your friend and promoter, Floyd Mayweather, has been going through a lot lately. What's your take on all of it?

MB: At the end of the day, it's unfortunate because me knowing him on a personal level, Floyd do a lot of stuff for a lot of people, so for people to come out and sue him, I think that's real unfortunate because of what he do for people; even people that come back and try to do wrong to him, so that's messed up.

PC: Floyd has hinted at some changes within the team. Give me your thoughts on that as well.

MB: I support him 100%. I fight for the company because of him. Whatever decision he makes, I'm riding with him. I have to do my part as a fighter and just try to contribute. I just won the title and as soon as this injury heals up, I'll be back in there providing for him and the company, so I support him 100%.

PC: Give me some closing thoughts for your fans out there!

MB: Just look for my comeback. Once I get healthy, it's a wrap and that's all I gotta say. I don't do a lot of talking, but as you can see, I was the underdog going into this last fight, and of course it wasn't the most entertaining fight, but when you go into a fight handicapped, it ain't much you can do. I'll bring the action next time. Sometimes you gotta win an ugly fight. I'd rather look ugly and win than look pretty and lose. I just want to thank my promoter Floyd Mayweather and all of my supporters.
