"We were expecting to make a statement. Nonito is a great fighter and a great human being and unfortunately we had to go up against a real nice guy, but that's boxing, right? It was a real good win and it felt really good to win, but it sucks that it had to be against him," stated Rudy Hernandez, world-class trainer working with undefeated WBA featherweight champion Nicholas Walters, who shared his thoughts on the performance against former champion Nonito Donaire. Although this was only the second fight that he worked with Team Walters, Hernandez is pleased with the progress that the team has made together in the short period of time.
"This is my second fight with Nicholas. I worked with him when he fought Vic Darchinyan in China. He came over to Los Angeles and worked a little bit and he liked the way I worked, so I went to China with him and he came back again for a couple of weeks after the fight in China and trained a little bit, got in a few pointers, and then he went back to Panama to continue his training and when he came back to Los Angeles, I was here to take care of him," Hernandez explained. "He is a phenomenal person, man. He's a great human being, real nice, easy to get along with. Him and his trainer and his dad are a pleasure to work with. It's just work. There is no, 'I'm the head coach,' and blah, blah, blah. It's teamwork; 100% teamwork. Rarely do you see that within a boxing team. From what I understand, he wants a couple of more fights at 126 and maybe move up in the third fight or so. Those are his words!"
