JULIAN WILLIAMS: "I JUST WANNA WIN IMPRESSIVELY...I'M EXPECTING A TOUGH FIGHT"

By Percy Crawford | December 16, 2014
JULIAN WILLIAMS:

"I just wanna win impressively. I want to go in here and be better than I was the last fight and win. I'm expecting a tough fight. I kind of think a lot of people overlooking this kid [Edgar Ortega], but I'm not overlooking him because I believe he's gonna be hungry and come ready to fight. Guys don't get these kind of opportunities like this, to come in and beat an undefeated guy like me," stated jr. middleweight contender Julian Williams, who talked about his upcoming return to the ring this Saturday. Check it out!

PC: You return to the ring this Saturday. How has everything been going?

JW: I feel good, man. I've had a good training camp. I'm ready to go and get it on.

PC: Your trainer, Stephen Edwards, was pleased with the win, but felt you were overanxious in chasing the knockout as far as your performance goes. Do you feel like you have worked on the things you need to in order to correct those issues?

JW: I just went back and watched the tape a few times and just go back and correct some of the simple mistakes I made in the last fight. I know what to do. I was just a little bit overanxious, you know, in my last fight. This time, I will work on staying composed and relaxed and just taking my time.

PC: When people describe you, for instance Andre Ward made some good references to you during the Centeno fight, you always hear things like you're the future and you're exciting. Is it hard not to get caught up in that and not try to headhunt and always score the big stoppage?

JW: I just think I got caught up in the moment. My last 3 fights before that fight, I was getting knockouts. But the thing that I said to myself after the fight, "I got all of those knockouts and I wasn't really looking for none of them." When I got all of those knockouts, I didn't think I was gonna knock any of them dudes out. I was just worried about boxing and winning rounds and if the knockout came, then it came, and fortunately it did. And then as soon as a fight comes up where I'm actually looking for a knockout, I didn't get it. I didn't struggle. I thought I looked a little bit sloppy, but it's still a part of the learning process. I'm only 24 years old, you know, so every fight is part of a learning process. I learned as much as I could from it and moved on.

PC: A lot of fighters don't get the opportunity to close their year out this late in the year. What statement are you looking to make for fans to remember you going into next year?

JW: I just wanna win impressively. I want to go in here and be better than I was the last fight and win. I'm expecting a tough fight. I kind of think a lot of people overlooking this kid [Edgar Ortega], but I'm not overlooking him because I believe he's gonna be hungry and come ready to fight. Guys don't get these kind of opportunities like this, to come in and beat an undefeated guy like me. He wants my spot. If he was smart, he wants to be in the position I'm in so he probably trained his heart out and come prepared, just like the last guy.

PC: Was it important for you to get this fight in at the end of the year, or if you wouldn't have gotten it, would you have been okay?

JW: Nah, I want to stay as busy as possible. I just think if I wouldn't have fought in December, I probably wouldn't be fighting until January or February. That's like 5 or 6 months off. I don't want to take off that long.

PC: Philly took a hit a few weeks back with both Hank Lundy and Gabe Rosado taking L's on the same show. What did you think of the performances?

JW: I feel Hank put up a good fight. I don't think there was a robbery. I think the early knockdown...I think it was a close fight that went Dulorme's way. Barry Hunter pulled a nice trick out his hat when he questioned Hank's heart. He said, "If you want me to stop the fight, I'll stop it right now." Hank showed all of his nuts in those last rounds because Barry questioned his heart. It worked out and I think that was a great move by Barry Hunter. It worked out for him because he had that kid running all around the ring. I think if he would've started earlier, he would've won the fight, but that's just the way the ball bounce sometimes.

PC: You're right. They say trainers always have to know what makes their fighter tick. That was a nice one.

JW: That was the turning point of the fight. I think Hank showed a lot of heart and determination. If you ask me, I think Dulorme edged it because of the knockdown and I'm just being honest and not biased because you know I'm always pulling for the Philly guy. I call a spade a spade, you know what I mean.

PC: Have you seen Ortega fight before, found footage of him, or do you not do that anyway?

JW: Nah man, I watch guys. I'm not one of these guys that say I don't watch guys. Everybody watches everybody. When I hear guys say they don't watch guys, they just let their people pick 'em and they fight 'em, 99.9% of the guys are lying. I watch guys. I'm up at 2 in the morning sometimes if I can't sleep watching guys. I was able to get a tape on him and he's got some fights on YouTube, his early fights and his last fight and his second to last fight. I've seen all of it. He seems sturdy. He's only got 2 losses and 10 knockouts in 15 fights and he's been 10 rounds 3 times and he's never been stopped. He's a little snappy like, so I'm expecting a tough fight; I really am.

PC: You are 17 fights into your career. What have you learned about yourself during those 17 fights?

JW: Um, man, that's a good question. I just think all of the fights together was just a different learning experience. They all brought different learning experiences. The fight with Alcine, I got to fight a veteran. He was a former world champion. He showed me how to pace myself. After the fight, I went home and studied the fight and I wasn't too happy with the performance. Even though I got the win, I was only 12-0 at the time fighting fights like that. And then I had the 50/50 fight with the Centeno kid. That was the prospect fight. Every prospect gotta go through it where they gotta fight a 50/50 prospect in an elimination fight and whoever loses is on the backburner. And then I had to fight another undefeated guy in the last fight. When you fight another undefeated guy that don't want to lose, every round is gonna be tough because he don't want to get embarrassed and he wants to win. I just gained great experience in all of my fights, but those stick out to me.

PC: You said before the Centeno/De La Rosa fight that you wanted the winner. Centeno stopped De La Rosa. Does the rematch make the most sense right now?

JW: Definitely. I think the fans want it more importantly and I think it makes good business sense and we all like money, you know what I mean (laughing). I think it makes sense, but right now, it looks like he's a 60-pounder and I'm comfortably making 54, so we'll see how that go. I'm pretty sure he wants to get the negative energy out the air and clear his name and I want to do the same. But if it happens, it happens, and if it don't, it doesn't. Like I said before, I came to fight that night. I know I can go on in my career knowing I came to fight that night. I was ready to go 10 rounds that night and I wasn't the reason the fight got stopped that night. If it happens, it happens and if it doesn't, it doesn't. I wish him the best of luck. He's doing a great job.

PC: J Rock, I wish you the best on Saturday night. We'll speak afterwards. Is there anything else you want to add?

JW: Just follow me on Twitter and Instagram, @JRockBoxing, and just tune in December 20th. I'm gonna put on a spectacular performance once again. I will close out the year with a win!
