TERRELL GAUSHA: "MAYBE LATE FEBRUARY...BE LOOKING FOR ME TO STEP IT UP NEXT YEAR IN COMPETITION"

By Percy Crawford | December 22, 2014
TERRELL GAUSHA:

"We already talking about maybe late February. I get some time to spend with my family. I had to train through the holidays, so now I get to go back home and spend some time with my daughter and my family and then go back at it to have another 6 or 7 weeks to get ready for February. I'm ready to keep it going. I feel comfortable, my body feels good, and I'm young, so I'm ready to get some more fights out of the way right now... Be looking for me to step it up next year in competition and just for me to keep putting on a good show," stated up-and-coming jr. middleweight Terrell Gausha, who talked about his latest win, his future plans, and much more. Check itout!

PC: Congratulations on a great knockout win against Cesar Vila. You registered that one in the 8th and final round. You said you wanted a good fight from Vila and he provided you with one.

TG: Yeah, he really came to fight, man. I think he was in better shape than any of my previous opponents and that's why he was able to give me a good fight like that. He was the perfect opponent for me because he just kept coming forward, so he gave me the chance to show my boxing skills and my ring IQ. It was the perfect fight for me.

PC: He was applying a lot of pressure on you during the course of the fight. How did you feel as the fight progressed?

TG: I was ready for whatever. I was training hard and put the work in and set myself up for the situation, so I felt good. I know that he was wearing down during the fight and as you could see, I was getting stronger and sharper. His punches was wide and didn't have nothing on them. I was able to stay in the pocket, pick his shots off, and counter him.

PC: You wanted to start everything with your jab. You got the jab working early. How much easier did that make life for you once you were able to start hitting him with the jab?

TG: It definitely made things easy for me. I'm a fan of old school boxing and back in the day, that's how I was taught to fight. I was taught to fight like they were taught back in the day, by using the jab. Once you're able to land your jab, everything becomes a little more easier because you're able to find your range.

PC: The ending of the fight could be a candidate for Knockout of the Year. You hit him with a 4-punch combination. Talk us through the ending, because again, it started with a blinding jab.

TG: Yeah, it was a 4-punch combination. I was setting him up the whole time for them sharp shots because I could see that I was getting 2 shots off at a time on him and I was waiting to put more punches together. Once I slid off of the ropes and he was just walking into me, I got myself some room and just let 'em go. I blinded him with the jab first and then the right hand and then I threw another jab/right hand. I hit him with a 4 piece; jab-right hand, jab-right hand. I hit him with the first 2 and he didn't move after the first 2, so I just followed up and kept 'em coming.

PC: Being that he had showed he was durable, when the shots landed. did you think the fight was over or did you feel you would have to keep fighting?

TG: When I hit him, the way he went down, I didn't think he would get up, but he had a lot of heart and he would have tried to continue if the ref wouldn't have called it off. But I think the ref was very fair and I don't disagree with his decision to stop the fight.

PC: What's next for you?

TG: We already talking about maybe late February. I get some time to spend with my family. I had to train through the holidays, so now I get to go back home and spend some time with my daughter and my family and then go back at it to have another 6 or 7 weeks to get ready for February. I'm ready to keep it going. I feel comfortable, my body feels good, and I'm young, so I'm ready to get some more fights out of the way right now.

PC: Man, I look forward to seeing the progression. Great performance and keep me posted. Is there anything else you would like to add?

TG: I just want to thank all of my fans for supporting me. I just try to give my fans the most exciting fights with good opposition. Be looking for me to step it up next year in competition and just for me to keep putting on a good show. I also want to thank Al Haymon and my team for everything they do for me.
