Moments ago at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara battered, dropped, and stopped former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. after nine rounds of action. The naturally bigger Fonfara, who agreed to fight at a catchweight of 173 pounds, set the tone early, busting up the face of Chavez Jr. until his eyes began to swell.
Though a point deduction in the 7th round appeared to give Chavez Jr. some hope of making a comeback on the scorecards, Fonfara quickly put an end to those chances when he landed a devastating left hook that sent the former champion to the canvas. To his credit, Chavez Jr. beat the count and fought toe-to-toe with Fonfara until the bell. Ultimately, however, Chavez Jr. was unable to answer the bell at the start of the 10th round and the fight was waved off.
