Moments ago at the Forum in Inglewood, California, middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin kept his undefeated record, as well as his knockout streak, intact with an impressive 6th round stoppage of challenger Willie Monroe Jr. It didn't take long for Golovkin's search and destroy style to have an impact. A devastating left hand in the 2nd round sent Monroe to the canvas for the first time of the fight. Golovkin patiently stalked during the follow-up, connecting with a series of punches before landing a right hand that sent Monroe to the canvas for the second time in the round. Although Monroe survived the round, it was clear that it was only a matter of time before Golovkin closed the show.
Golovkin came out looking for the kill in round 3. Both fighters began trading punches in close. Although Monroe was landing some shots, it was Golovkin who was doing the heavier damage. Monroe had a bit of a rally in the 4th round as Golovkin willingly stood in front of him and ate a series of punches. Though Golovkin landed some devastating shots to start the 5th round, to his credit, Monroe continued to fire back, landing some combinations that appeared to irritate Golovkin at times. Golovkin came out fired up in the 6th, however, landing another series of shots that had Monroe on shaky legs. Another combination from Golovkin sent Monroe to the canvas for the third time of the fight. Although Monroe barely beat the count, he admitted to the referee that he was done for the night, giving Golovkin his 20th knockout victory in a row at 45 seconds of round 6.
Also on the card, flyweight knockout artist Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez made easy work of Edgar Sosa, dropping him three times en route to a 2nd round TKO victory. Gonzalez landed more than 70 power punches in the 2 rounds of action.
