HANK LUNDY: "HERRERA, WITH 7 KNOCKOUTS, WHAT CAN HE DO TO ME...I'M OUT TO HURT HIM AND KNOCK HIM OUT"

By Percy Crawford | May 20, 2015
HANK LUNDY:

"That's a Golden Boy fighter, so I have the same mentality as I have always had and that's to seek and destroy. And Herrera, with 7 knockouts, what can he do to me...I really think he beat Danny in that fight, so once I beat him, everybody gonna see who the real champ is...I'm going to try to take his head off... it's all war, blood, sweat and tears and I'm out to hurt him and knock him out," stated jr. welterweight contender Hank Lundy, who talked about his July 11 clash with fellow jr. welterweight contender Mauricio Herrera. Check out what else he had to say!

PC: It appears your back is against the wall again, but you seem to respond well when that's the case. Is that the approach for this fight?

HL: Well, you know, with my last fight on HBO against Thomas Dulorme, a lot of people felt as though I won. But with the promoter situation, if I was with a big time promoter, I would've got the nod. But you know, first and foremost, we got a deal with HBO, but at the same token, we upset that the judges didn't call it fair. But we won the fans that night and this is the reason why I'm back on HBO again.

PC: Mauricio Herrera is another guy that seems to get the short end of the stick in fights. Do you feel like both of you guys are almost on an even playing field considering you both have been on the short end of the stick in some decisions?

HL: No! I still have that mentality and the same feeling because this guy is with Golden Boy. Golden Boy knows me. Also, they have Bernard, who is from Philadelphia, and Bernard knows me very well and he know what I'm going to come to the ring and do and that's fight. But at the end of the day, that's a Golden Boy fighter, so I have the same mentality as I have always had and that's to seek and destroy. And Herrera, with 7 knockouts, what can he do to me (laughing)?

PC: You have shown that you can box, you can mix it up, you can be a fast starter and a slow starter. What Hank Lundy can we expect in July?

HL: In different fights, you see different styles from me. That's why I'm an entertaining fighter. I'm not one dimensional. Whatever he puts in front of me that I can exploit and take, that's what I'ma do. But you gonna see the old throwback Hank Lundy. The Hank Lundy that knocked out the former two-time world champ David Diaz; that's the Hank Lundy that you gonna see come fight night.

PC: You're taking your camp to Vegas. What's out there for you? What are you going to Vegas to do and with who?

HL: Training camp! I'm actually going out there with a good friend, Shawn Porter, who is fighting Adrien Broner, another guy who I worked with 4 times during camp, but you know, at the end of the day, it's a good opportunity to go to camp with Shawn Porter, a good friend of mine from the amateur days. He has a style like Herrera somewhat, you know. Shawn Porter can box and he can also come forward and he is also a bigger man. Putting in work with him, I'll definitely be stronger and be ready for whatever Herrera comes with. I'll be prepared for it.

PC: You just spoke briefly about being back on HBO. All of your fights deliver entertainment, win, lose or draw. Obviously you come with a good skill set as well, but do you think you not disappointing as far as action is why the networks keep you on?

HL: You gotta look at it, man; as you follow my career, I have never been in a dull fight. All of my fights  are entertaining; there is always drama and a story line. At the end of the day, it's always somebody getting hurt, but it don't be me (laughing). It's about to be a helluva show July 11th in LA. I'm training hard for it and we coming to put on a show.

PC: You were scheduled to fight Petrov, but had the weight issue and that didn't work out. I know when we spoke before, you wanted to be busy this year. Are you hoping this fight in July gets the ball rolling to get in at least 3 fights or so this year?

HL: Yeah, I think it does. I'm going in there and fighting for a title and this title right here...I'm actually rated #5 in the WBC, so once I win this belt, that puts me right in the category of fighting for a world title, which I been chasing for some time now. After beating this guy, we're going to go forward. I put it like this, he fought Danny Garcia from Philly, and one thing about me that the fans love and the media love is I don't go with no BS. I really think he beat Danny in that fight, so once I beat him, everybody gonna see who the real champ is.

PC: When you watch Mauricio Herrera, what do you see in him?

HL: I actually see a little bit of myself in him. He ain't scared to fight no one. But that's all the respect I can give him right there because now we about to go into battle and I'm going to try to take his head off. So all of the respect in the world is out the window. We can be friends after the fight, but leading up to this fight, it's all war, blood, sweat and tears and I'm out to hurt him and knock him out.

PC: You seem like that guy that don't want to have any kind of relationship with your opponents. Is that just where you have to be or like to be mentally heading into fights, because you're never respectful or cordial and it seems like it's intentional?

HL: That's the mind fame that all fighters have to put themselves into going into a war. Why be friends with somebody that is trying to take food out your family's mouth or your mouth? The friendship stuff is out the door and after we fight, we shake hands or nod or whatever, but you know me, I really don't give a damn. I'm coming in there to fight and do what I gotta do.

PC: I look forward to it. I'll definitely be getting some camp updates from you while you're in Vegas. Is there anything you wanna add before I let you go?

HL: Well, y'all know what it is. Hammerin Hank coming to city or town near you. It's Hammer Time!
