TRAMAINE WILLIAMS: "EXPECT FIREWORKS…I'M MORE DEDICATED AND MOTIVATED THAN EVER"

By Percy Crawford | May 22, 2015
TRAMAINE WILLIAMS:

"They can expect fireworks, they can expect a knockout, and just expect Tramaine Williams to look spectacularÂ…I sat the whole 2014 until October and once I got home in October, I just been working. I've been having great sparring and I'm more dedicated and motivated than everÂ…I think my defense and my ability to think in the ring separates me from a lot of fighters," stated up-and-coming super bantamweight Tramaine Williams, who talked about his upcoming May 30 return to the ring. Check it out!

PC: It's been a long road for you. What can we expect on May 30th?

TW: They can expect fireworks, they can expect a knockout, and just expect Tramaine Williams to look spectacular.

PC: I have read where you said the worst thing that happened to you was probably the best. What did you take away from going to prison where you can deem it as the best thing that happened to you?

TW: Being in a jail cell and being away from boxing, the thing that I love the most, it was kind of the worst thing that's ever happened to me. To be fighting in Madison Square Garden, that fight would have been a defining fight for me. So everything that happened, it's like, man, this is the worst thing ever, but in all actuality, it was the best thing because it kind of changed my mindset. I was humbled when I was in jail, but after I came home, it was a different type of humbleness, a different type of motivation to the craft and the sport and to my family and supporters and the people that really cared about me. I feel like maybe I was doing it for the wrong reasons. I got greedy. Greed is the root of all evil and I kind of got greedy. Greed is the worst thing ever.

PC: Speak on the Madison Square Garden situation for people not in the know.

TW: I was supposed to fight a 6-rounder against a kid named Jiovany Fuentes. That would have been my first fight on the east coast and I think that fight would have defined everything. I felt that would have been the turning point. I believe if I would have stayed home, I would have been on the Mayweather-Pacquiao undercard. From that aspect, it would have put everything on the right path and I would have just grown from there. It's kind of crazy that I went in two days before that fight.

PC: Anytime you go away like that, you find out who really has good intentions for your well-being. Was it imperative for you to make your circle smaller?

TW: It was real important because people that was with me every single day before I went to jail did not write me, send me a picture, or put money on my books so I could get commissary or visit me. The people that were with me every day I thought were my friends. And the people I least expected visited me and wrote me and it's like, dang, these people I wasn't with every day. It's kind of ironic; you can have a friend that you don't hang with every day and he could really be a genuine friend.

PC: You were away, so obviously you haven't been active since 2013. What have you been doing since your release?

TW: Since the end of 2013, I been working. I was supposed to fight in December, but something happened with my medicals. I didn't fight then. I was supposed to fight in January and didn't fight. So I sat the whole 2014 until October and once I got home in October, I just been working. I've been having great sparring and I'm more dedicated and motivated than ever.

PC: What does it mean for you to have this second chance in boxing?

TW: This means everything because you only get one second chance, so I gotta make everything of it. With this second chance, I feel like I gotta prove everybody wrong. If I mess up this time, there might not be a third time, there might not be another chance, so I gotta take advantage of this opportunity now.

PC: You're an athletic southpaw and that's always tough to deal with. What other attributes do you have that you feel will separate you from the competition?

TW: I think my defense and my ability to think in the ring separates me from a lot of fighters. People kind of sleep on the super bantamweight division, but I believe it's like the second or third best weight class in boxing. But I think the thing that's going to separate me is I have great defense.

PC: Throughout your hardships, your trainer and your manager really stuck by your side. How important was that in your comeback?

TW: Very important because I'm with them right now. I'm still with the same people that stuck by my side and that's important to me. I'm grateful for them.

PC: Being that you have been out of the ring and live action for so long, any nerves or anxiety leading up to your ring return?

TW: Right now, more than anything, it's a hunger feeling. Definitely anxiety to get in there. I don't really get nervous. I get nervous, but it's a different type of nervousness; it's more anxiousness to get in there because I want to hurry up and get in there. I want to get in the ring and just prove to people that I haven't lost a step. If anything, I gained a step. And I want to show it. I don't want to just think about it and say it; I want to show it.

PC: Are you looking for things out of yourself to prove you are back or has the gym showed you that already?

TW: Actually fight time, I want to prove it to everybody because in the gym, it's different. In the gym, you're free and you're home and you're comfortable, but I want to prove to myself when I get in there. My mental is right. I just want to see if my physical is up to par. I know, but I want to show the whole entire world to see that my physical, my mental, and my attitude is all up to par. I really think I gained a step and I'm kind of battling with myself on that and that's motivating to show that I can still do it and I gotta prove it to myself and the world that I still got it.

PC: I wish you the best of luck. I'm pulling for you, man. I'm all about second chances and I hope you make the most of it. Is there anything else you would like to add?

TW: I want everybody to look out for me, remember the name, and watch out. And I'm sending this out to every prospect that's in my weight class and around my weight class, I will fight anybody that is willing to put their 0 on the line versus my 0.
