Abner Mares, the three-division World Champion boxer, welcomed a new level of inspiration into his training camp on Tuesday – six teens from the LA County Sherriff's Century Boxing Gym and club. Mares is in training for his August 29 "Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN" fight vs. Leo Santacruz. The teens were from South Central LA and are part of the Boxing team at the gym, which is run by the Sherriff's department. Mares' is a supporter and advocate for the gym and loves sharing his story of how he rose up from the same area to become a world champion.
"The greatest way to come into camp is by giving back, talking to the kids, hearing their stories and knowing who I'm fighting for – my fans," said Mares. "It gives me inspiration and exhilaration for this fight. This is a #fightforthefans – I'm glad to welcome these kids into the gym. They reflect where I came from and hopefully my boxing career will be inspiration for theirs and their lives."
Abner Mares is a two-time WBC and ABC title belt holder. His August 29 fight will be a WBC Diamond title belt fight in the Featherweight division.
