MORGAN FITCH TALKS GENNADY GOLOVKIN, JUNE 18 RING RETURN, AND MORE:

"Ya boy got game. We got the skills to pay the bills. I ain't calling no names out. If anybody want a good challenge, then they can call on me. But yeah, we got the skills over here...You can't let the monster be bigger than the moment. You gotta stand your ground and that's what Roy was talking about. We going to stand the ground and we going to box a little bit too. We going to get on the inside and get a little bit dirty too, just like he dirty on the inside. We know how to do all of it and that's what I think Roy Jones meant by that," stated fast-rising middleweight contender Morgan Fitch, who talked about his June 18 ring return, Gennady Golovkin, and much more. Check it out!

PC: June 18th in Pittsburgh, your new hometown. Tell us about it.

MF: Yeah man! Shit, new hometown, but my hometown is still Raceland, Louisiana to the backbone. I'll never forget that. But yeah man, June 18th, it's going to be a great show, man, going down here at Meadows Casino. I don't even know who we fighting yet. It really don't even matter; as long as I do my part and train how I train, then I should go in there and come out with that W. As long as everything is checked on that checklist and we doing everything right, I ain't even really worried about nothing, man. We always be on schedule and we always in camp training, so everything is good, you know what I'm saying?

PC: For sure, man. You're in camp preparing. How is training going?

MF: I'm feeling great. I don't never leave camp; that's the problem. I'm married and got 3 kids and they stay an hour from me. I got a room right here in the gym that I stay in. I might go home for a day or two to see my kids and I'm right back here. It's like I work on a boat offshore. I go home for like two days to visit them and then I'm right back here in the gym for like a week or two and then I go home and do the family thing. I'm always training, man, and always trying to stay a notch above. We 16-0 now and I got that shout out the other day, which I was happy about. I got excited, but I want to stay in my lane with that and still be a humble dude and wait for that time to present itself. I gotta stay ready and just be ready for this phone to ring. A lot of fighters might slip up like that. They ain't training and they at home or whatever, but nah, man. We didn't move from Louisiana and relocate my family and my kids; my one baby at the time, but now we got three me and my wife. I didn't relocate them to Pittsburgh to lose. I'm going to give it my all with this. It's all or nothing right now. I'm all in, man, so whenever this phone ring, I don't care if it's a day notice or two weeks notice or whatever, we just going to be ready. I have a great trainer who has been in the shadows for awhile, Tommy Yankello. He trained champion Paul Spadafora back in the day, Calvin Brock, Monty Meza Clay, Verquan Kimbrough, Manard Reed, and the list goes on. I'm ready to bring my coach back in that light because he deserves it. It's been a long time for him too. I'm just making a lot of sacrifices, man. You already know about the boxing game; it's just about a lot of sacrifices. It's all worth it.

PC: And you're literally sleeping in the gym. Some people say that as a metaphor, but you're literally sleeping there.

MF: Man, look, literally, watch; hold on for a second. Tell me if you can hear this right here. You hear that (door opening)?

PC: Yessir!

MF: That's one door opening to the room I sleep in. Now watch this (door opening). That's the gym door. I'm right here, dawg. This is where I'm at. This is where they can catch me at; just grind, grind, grind is all I know right now, man.

PC: I have to ask you, did you expect the Roy Jones Jr. plug after the Gennady Golovkin fight against Dominic Wade or were you just as shocked as everyone else when he named you as the guy to test Golovkin?

MF: Man, look, I'm going to be honest with you, I didn't have a clue. I didn't know nothing about that. To be honest with you, we just had a fighter, Ed Latimore, who is a 12-0 heavyweight and who is doing his thing. He's signed to Roc Nation right now. Anyway, he had a fight that night, right, so I go help my coach and work the corner because I'm a student of the game as well. I just like being around boxing and the atmosphere. I'm always watching it to keep my mind sharp. So anyway, I'm over there working the fights and I got my family there because they came up that weekend to see me in my room. I got my wife and my kids, they over there in my room and I'm at the fights with coach and I get back and we ain't got cable over here. We just watch a lot of movies and stuff on the box. So we laying down watching movies and before you know it, I'm getting text messages and calls and I'm like, "What the hell's going on?" Then my coach called and told me and after he called, my pops beeped in and I'm getting text messages from my potnas down in Louisiana. I had no clue, man. I was very excited, but I didn't want to get overly excited. But I thank Jones for the plug because now the world wondering who Morgan Fitch is. I've been wanting that for a long time because we've been getting it out of the mud since day one. He put me on a pedestal up there and now it's, like I said, the world wanna know who Morgan Fitch is now! I'm staying in my lane, dawg, and staying focused on what I need to focus on and right now that's June 18th. I'll wait for that time to present itself; that way I can show the world what's happening, you know what I mean?

PC: I got you. You definitely have to focus on what's in front of you, but Roy Jones, who really knows his boxing, didn't mention your name in the same breath as some fringe contender. He mentioned you at the top of the heap and says Gennady Golovkin should be looking to fight you. That has to be a good feeling.

MF: Yeah man! You know what, man? Hands down, man, ya boy got game. We got the skills to pay the bills. I ain't calling no names out. If anybody want a good challenge, then they can call on me. But yeah, we got the skills over here. We got the boxing game and in boxing, you gotta be able to have all of it. And that's what a lot of fighters that I watch today don't have. Some of them do, but some of them don't. It's either one style they have or the other style and that's it. There is no in between. But if you go look at the greats like James Toney; I love James Toney. You gotta be able to box when it's time to box. You gotta be able to fight on the inside when it's time to fight on the inside. You gotta know how to slug when it's time to slug. Basically, you gotta be able to slow down the pace to where it's your pace. You gotta be able to do all things in that ring and that's something that I got and me and my trainer work on. My trainer is 44 years old, but he's still a student of the game. He ain't standing in no dim light like a lot of these other trainers. He's a student of the game and he's still wanting to learn. It's all about game, man. You gotta have game, man. Your defense gotta be right. It's not about just hands up blocking. You gotta be able to catch and roll with punches to take the steam off of it. You gotta be able to counter. You gotta be able to do all of that. We got all of that, dawg. They throw that right hand, I roll with that and we coming back. Catch that left hook and we coming back with a left hook and taking baby steps; all of that good stuff. You ain't gotta be bouncing around like a jack rabbit or nothing; just baby steps. Move to the left a little bit and move to the right a little bit; in and out and little feints.

Just little stuff can turn a fight around and I think that's what Roy was talking about when he was talking about the Triple G thing, man. When you watch guys that box him, they all trying to run and box. And I ain't taking nothing away from Triple G; I know he a monster. I ain't taking nothing away from that boy, but everybody that get in there and box him, they not boxing what my style is. They either trying to run or their game is messed up before they even step in the ring. It's like a Mike Tyson thing. They were already scared before they got in the ring. I really ain't worried about it because I done been hit with the big stuff already. I done fought [Darnell] Boone and you already know getting hit by Boone is like someone with bricks in their hands. I already been hit with that and got back up and fought him to a draw and that was in my 12th pro fight. But I can tell you now, if it would've went 2 more rounds, I would've had that fight period. But that was the past. Back to the G thing, the guy that I really liked watching fight Triple G was Willie Monroe, man. If you watch him fight him on the inside, he didn't have no steam on his punches, but he was giving Triple G a little run for his money on the inside, and then after that, what happened? He just turned around and quit and I was a little upset with that. Only if he seen how good he was actually doing, it would have been different. But he was doing great on the inside. You can't let the monster be bigger than the moment. You gotta stand your ground and that's what Roy was talking about. We going to stand the ground and we going to box a little bit too. We going to get on the inside and get a little bit dirty too, just like he dirty on the inside. We know how to do all of it and that's what I think Roy Jones meant by that.

PC: We all got eyes on you now, man. Best of luck to you in June and we will definitely get a camp update from you prior to the fight. Is there anything else you want to add?

MF: I want to give a shout out to my fans. Thank y'all for supporting me and I want to give a shout out to my people back home in Louisiana; Raceland I love y'all, man. And I gotta give a shout out to my moms, my pops, my kids, Alanah Lyric Fitch, Harmony Shae Fitch, and Morgan Richard Fitch Jr. We call him "Lil Mo". And my wife, Jamie Fitch. And thank you, Percy, for having me on this interview.
