"I said, you know, don't count anything out on him coming over to the UFC, that anything is possible...I did not believe that McGregor-Mayweather would happen, and it did, so anything is possible. I actually have a meeting with those guys today. I do; with his crew," stated UFC President Dana White, who recently appeared on "Undisputed" on FS1 and revealed to hosts Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe that he had a meeting scheduled with members of Team Mayweather. When asked to elaborate on exactly who he was meeting with, White simply responded "his crew" before admitting that he did not think Floyd himself would attend. One can only assume that the "crew" that Dana White is referring to is Mayweather's longtime advisor, Al Haymon, as well as Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe.
Upon hearing the news of the meeting, it didn't take long for the conversation to shift to the possibility of Mayweather competing in mixed martial arts. Although MMA fans and fighters alike are salivating at the prospect of Mayweather stepping into the Octagon, the future Hall of Famer has made it clear that he has no interest in competing in the UFC. "I never said I was going to fight in the UFC...would and could do is different things...I'm not going to do it," Mayweather emphatically stated during an interview with FightHype.com just last week. While White was vague on what the meeting is actually about, sources have informed us that it has more to do with the UFC's interest in getting into boxing. "I'm interested in getting into boxing in 2018, so we'll see," White also mentioned during his appearance on "Undisputed".
Keep in mind that just last month, it was White who first revealed the UFC's plans to hold meetings in hopes of moving full speed ahead into the boxing realm. "The beginning of this year, everybody who's anybody in the boxing business is coming out here to meet with me, the beginning of this year, except for De La Cuckoo and Bob Arum. So I'm going to sit down with everybody, you know, talk and see what everybody's got going on and whatever everybody's thinking and then I'm going to start goofing around over there a little bit," White explained during a media luncheon shortly after Thanksgiving. We're told that today's meeting is the first of many between the UFC and several other prominent figures in boxing scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.
