ESPN2 viewers who were looking forward to seeing Floyd Mayweather Sr. go head to head with younger brother Roger Mayweather as trainers during this week's edition of Friday Night Fights may be disappointed to learn that it's not happening. Initially, they were slated to face off in a battle of the minds as Floyd's fighter, Vernon Paris, is taking on Roger's fighter, Tim Coleman, in a grudge match with ranking implications at stake. FightHype reached out to Mayweather Sr. to get his assessment on how camp had gone only to find out that he will not be working the corner of Paris. Although he didn't get into any specifics as to why he won't be in the corner, Mayweather Sr. did give us enough information to draw our own conclusions. "Listen man, you know me Percy. It's my way, the highway, and no other way. Once I don't have that, it's time for me to go my own way," he stated before making it clear that he does not have a reputation for training out of shape fighters.
Whether or not the comment about training out of shape fighters was directed towards Paris remains to be seen, but Mayweather Sr. was adamant about the fact that he will not be in his corner under any circumstances on Friday night. This would have marked the first time that Floyd went head to head against his younger brother Roger as a trainer. He has, however, been in opposite corner of another Mayweather before, youngest brother Jeff. Back in May of 2008, Floyd Mayweather Sr. guided Oscar De La Hoya to a unanimous decision win over Jeff Mayweather's fighter, Steve Forbes, making him 1-0 in the Mayweather family trainers. It's an undefeated record which Big Floyd plans on keeping in tact. "It's a competition for sure. I don't want to lose to any trainer, so you know I damn sure ain't trying to lose to one of my brothers. I'm 1-0 and want it to stay that way," he added. Although it's unclear as to exactly what happened in camp to make Mayweather Sr. walk away from the Brother vs. Brother battle of the minds, it's clear that Floyd wasn't too confident of their chances of winning the fight.
Tim Coleman will take on Vernon Paris this Friday night on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights. Despite the absence of Floyd Mayweather Sr., it should turn out to be a great fight given the bad blood between both fighters. Be sure to check out Tim Coleman's interview where he shares his own opinion on why Mayweather Sr. won't be in the corner.
