"Team Alexander, we're down with Alexander vs. Ortiz, if the deal is right," stated world-class trainer Kevin Cunningham in response to recent comments made by Danny Garcia, trainer of former welterweight champion Victor Ortiz, who suggested that a bout with Devon Alexander is just what the doctor ordered to prove to fans that Ortiz is still a force to be reckoned with and has the necessary tools to be the first to defeat Floyd Mayweather. Although Ortiz has been out of the country vacationing in France, Garcia hinted that Team Ortiz is eyeing the former jr. welterweight champion as a possible opponent when he makes a return to the ring.
"That would be a good fight, because he only has one loss and he's a former champion. I think that the people would like to see that fight," Garcia would tell Las Vegas boxing scribe Chris Robinson. "That way we can show the people that we're not here to fight guys with four, five losses. We're fighting guys near the top of the division or guys who are undefeated. Berto, Mayweather, and now Devon Alexander. We'll show the people that we're fighting the best and I think we can beat Devon Alexander."
Upon hearing Garcia's comments, Cunningham wasted no time to respond. "If Danny Garcia wants to get Victor beat again, come fuck with Devon," he replied, making it clear that they would love nothing more than to make Ortiz their first fight in the new division. Alexander is currently the WBC #1 ranked welterweight according to their latest rankings. Ortiz slipped to #4 in the rankings after losing the title via 4th round knockout to Floyd Mayweather. It's highly unlikely that Mayweather will defend the title, opting instead to relinquish it, so the winner of Alexander vs. Ortiz would be the frontrunner to reclaim the title in the near future. "Tell Danny I said like Marvin Gaye said, let's get it on," Cunningham added.
