Moments ago, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, former Strikeforce, K-1, and Dream champion Alistair Overeem proved to be too much to handle for even "the biggest and most athletic wrestler" the UFC had to offer, as former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar was brutally beat down in the first round by The Reem at UFC 141. Overeem showed absolutely no respect whatsoever for the standup of Lesnar, as he walked him down, closed the distance, and began punishing him with devastating knees to the body. A hard left kick to the body had Lesnar doubling over in agony before Overeem finished him off with a barrage of right hands. When all was said and done, Overeem was all smiles and looking forward to a title shot against current champion Junior Dos Santos, while Lesnar officially announced his retirement from the sport. Relive all the action in FightHype's round-by-round results.
ALISTAIR OVEREEM VS. BROCK LESNAR
ROUND 1
Overeem comes out stalking. Lesnar throw a quick leg kick that misses. Another leg kick from Lesnar and this time it lands. Overhand right from Overeem just misses. Lesnar grabs a leg, but Overeem escapes. Knee lands for Overeem. Another knee. And another. Lesnar looks hurt by those knees. Overeem backs Lesnar up to the cage. Another knee lands for Overem. Lesnar tries to answer. Hard left hand lands for OVereem. HARD left kick to the body lands for Overem and Lesnar crumples holding his stomach and wincing in pain. Overeem jumps on him and lands a barrage of right hands. That's it. It's over. The ref calls a halt to the action.
THE WINNER BY TKO...ALISTAIR OVEREEM
Also on the card, Nate Diaz taught Donald Cerrone the finer points of the Sweet Science, putting on a masterful display of boxing skills en route to a dominant unanimous decision victory. Time and time again, Diaz landed devastating combinations that continuously snapped the head back of Cerrone. Although his face was bloodied and bruised, Cerrone did find some success landing a tripping leg kick, but Diaz would simply stand back up and continue to administer his his boxing lesson.
In yet another notable fight, Johny Hendricks only needed two punches to stop Jon Fitch in his tracks. The first punch he threw was a devastating left hand that immediately stretched Fitch in the opening seconds of the fight, sending him crashing to the floor. Hendricks would land one more follow-up punch before the referee wisely jumped in to call a halt to the fight.
