"He's just becoming a better fighter all around
he's in the prime of his career and a lot of things are happening for him," stated legendary trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. as he shared his thoughts on Miguel Cotto's win over Alfonso Gomez. Check out what else he had to say about Cotto and how he thinks he would do in a fight with his son, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Plus, you don't want miss his thoughts on all of this past weekends fights as he states that Johnson deserved a draw, Dawson is a coward, Cintron should retire and much more, including an update on Oscar De La Hoya's training for his fight with Steve Forbes.
PC: How much longer you guys got in Puerto Rico?
FM: Two more weeks! It's not a vacation though; it's work for me. I ain't treating it no other kind of way. That's the way we doing it down here.
PC: This is a business trip only. I got you.
FM: Right, right! Everything is going good too.
PC: Give me your thoughts on the Dawson-Johnson fight?
FM: That fight should've been called a draw man. I'm really surprised that
one of the things is like I was telling you before about his lady and baby and stuff like that and I never knew that they were coming down there, but the same thing could be happening with Mustafa. It could be the same thing happening to him right now because he looked like garbage. He looked like garbage man. A man 39 years old and you fight a life and death fight and then you say you don't even want to fight him anymore?
PC: Yeah, that kind of tripped me out when he said that.
FM: Yeah, that would trip anybody out. A man a decade and a half your senior and you don't want to fight him again. He talking about moving his career on, well you ain't getting on with your career. How are you getting your career on when you fuckin' scared of a man old enough where you could be his child? To me, that right there shows that there are no guts there. He's saying he wants to move on, but if people thought the fight was close, he should want to come right back with an old man like that. The old man said he'll fight you so that shows right there that, evidently, you have a lot of fear in you. Johnson had him rocked 3 or 4 times man. He really had him rocked a couple of times. When you fighting a guy 14 years your senior, you supposed to beat the shit out of them. It ain't no excuse man! I'll tell you right now man, Hopkins would beat somebody like Chad Dawson. You gotta remember, Hopkins is cagier and more everything than Glen Johnson. As a matter of fact, he's the only one that stopped Glen Johnson out of all of them fights. Chad doesn't have a chin. That motherfucker ain't got a chin and he can't stand pressure.
PC: He may move down to '68, is what they're saying, to fight Calzaghe.
FM: Ain't no way in hell he gonna whoop Calzaghe throwing all of them goddamn punches. He moving down to a man that's 35 and he couldn't whoop a man that's 39. You know what you call him [Calzaghe] is going to be throwing all of them damn punches; he definitely couldn't handle that. Let him go on down there, we'll see. He's going to fold. I think that's what he's going to try and do and if he does that, he's going to have less chance of winning. How you going to sit up there and say you don't want to fight a man that age? Ain't no way in hell I wouldn't take that fight. I would take that fight just to prove that it was for real. Chad ain't no fighter; he's a coward. He ain't got a fighter's heart. He got a lot of bitch in him. That's what he got in him, a lot of bitch. He ain't got no fucking heart.
PC: What did you think of Antonio Tarver's performance?
FM: Ah man, I didn't even get a chance to see Tarver's performance. I turned back over there, but I didn't watch it. I heard his fight was nothing at all. I didn't see it, but everybody tells me Tarver's fight was nothing at all. From my understanding, he's supposed to fight Chad in July. I heard Tarver didn't look good at all.
PC: Moving on to the HBO fights. What did you think about Margarito's fight against Cintron?
FM: Cintron can't beat a novice amateur man. Cintron can't fight a lick. Cintron can't spell box.
PC: You told me something awhile back about Emanuel Steward's track record with fighters who weren't established already. I'm sure the Cintron fight hasn't altered your opinion?
FM: Yeah man! Like I told you, I ain't even talking about it no more, but what you just said is a true story. His track record is looking real bad. He's losing every fight that he's been in the corner of. He wins with that big Klitschko boy because he's so much damn bigger than everybody else. All of his young guns are getting beat: Vivian Harris, Kermit Cintron, Jermain Taylor and even Andy Lee, so that tells you something about the trainer man. His fighters don't even put up good fights man. If you look at the Cintron fight, Cintron quit! He laid on the floor. He definitely didn't want to get up. He can't fight man. I was talking about Emanuel's track record today man. If Emanuel gets a fighter that can't fight already, they could forget about it. He's not a good trainer. Those guys could say what they want to say about me, but I've proved myself over and over again.
PC: I know you've been impressed with Cotto lately. How did he look to you?
FM: Cotto looked good last night man. I think my son could still whoop Cotto, but it's a different type of fight than other people fighting him. Gomez is nowhere in my son's class, but I gotta call a spade a spade and a heart a heart and call it like I see it. Cotto is definitely getting a lot better. Like you said, when he fought Shane, it enhanced his game. When he beat Shane, it enhanced his game and he got a lot better overall. He's just becoming a better fighter all around. He toyed with the guy last night pretty much. He took his time and got him out of there when he wanted too. It's a big improvement for him and right now, he's in the prime of his career and a lot of things are happening for him.
PC: Who would you like in a fight between Cotto and Margarito?
FM: He's gonna let you see what my son might have did to Margarito or worse. Margarito is good for running his big mouth, but he's going to get an ass whoopin'. He takes a lot of punches anyway and he's slow.
PC: Were you shocked that Cintron couldn't do more damage to Margarito?
FM: Man, Cintron can't fuckin' fight man. He needs to quit boxing right now! He needs to quit right now. Not today or tomorrow, but right now!
