Sources close to the situation have informed us that IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire has agreed to move up in weight to face WBC & WBA super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares. The fight is tentatively scheduled to take place some time later this year and will be televised by HBO.
Donaire, who recently became a free agent when manager Cameron Dunkin was able to negotiate his release from Gary Shaw Promotions, is no stranger to the super flyweight division. Less than two years ago, he held the NABF super flyweight title and last fought at 115 lbs. in May of 2007 when he defeated Kevin Hudgins via first round TKO before moving down in weight just two months later to shock the world by stopping then champion Vic Darchinyan inside of five rounds.
Mijares, who's coming off a split decision victory over Alexander Munoz in a title unification, is no stranger to upsets himself, bursting onto the scene with a masterful display of boxing skills to win a unanimous decision over the heavily favored Jorge Arce over a year ago.
The matchup between Donaire and Mijares promises to be a battle as both men have excellent boxing skills.
