After a brief stint in the middleweight division, former welterweight champion Paul Williams made an impressive debut at jr. middleweight with an eighth round stoppage of former champion Verno Phillips. Despite a bad gash over his right eye that was caused by a headbutt in the first round, Williams dominated the fight from beginning to end as he continued to hammer Phillips with debilitating body shots. At the end of the eighth round, the ringside doctor called a halt to the punishment as he ruled Phillips was unable to continue.
After being dropped by a straight right hand in the second round, undefeated heayvweight contender Cristobal Arreola returned the favor by flooring his opponent, Travis Walker, twice in the same round. Arreola finished the job in the third after a crushing left hook dropped Walker a third time, prompting the referee to call a halt to the action.
