"No, he started doing some dirty things. He hit me low a couple of times. I told the ref before the fight he hits low and I told him I would allow it once and maybe twice, but if he keeps on doing it, I'm going to hit him backĀ
What I remember is the bell ringing and then I put my glove out to touch his glove and I just felt him hit me twice and that's all I remember," stated WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano as he talked about his recent disqualification victory over Bernabe Concepcion. Check it out!
PC: Congratulations on your win Saturday.
SL: Thank you!
PC: How do you feel you were performing up until the late hit?
SL: I was doing good. I was just doing what my corner was telling me and they were telling me to box and keep him at my range. So we were doing good until he got frustrated and just started fighting dirty I guess.
PC: You told me in our pre-fight interview that you wanted to use your jab and keep him at a distance, so in your eyes, your gameplan was working to a tee.
SL: Yeah. The gameplan was working perfectly because he couldn't really do anything.
PC: During the fight before the DQ, was he starting to do some dirty things in there or was that the first incident?
SL: No, he started doing some dirty things. He hit me low a couple of times. I told the ref before the fight he hits low and I told him I would allow it once and maybe twice, but if he keeps on doing it, I'm going to hit him back. He goes, "That's fine and all, but don't retaliate to where it would put him down." I just let him know that and he said it was fine. And I did do it once. He hit me and I hit him back and he complained about it. He told the ref, "He hit me low." And the ref told him he hit me first. He saw it.
PC: So Jay pretty much let you guys fight?
SL: Yeah, Jay Nady is a really good referee. I really like him.
PC: It was obvious that you were shook up from those late shots, but were you almost out?
SL: What I remember is the bell ringing and then I put my glove out to touch his glove and I just felt him hit me twice and that's all I remember. I was asking people if I fell hard because I don't remember the fall. I don't remember the fall. I really don't. I was asking people did I fall hard enough to where my head was bouncing off of the ring. They told me I fell in like slow motion. I don't know, but I don't remember. The only thing I remember is getting hit twice.
PC: It appeared you were on your way to a victory. Do you think that was a frustration or desperation move for him to do that?
SL: Pretty much, yeah, because I had the fight in the bag.
PC: We also spoke before the fight about the layoff. Did you feel any rust in there?
SL: No, no. I felt no rust at all! I didn't get tired or anything.
PC: I'm sure you would like to be a little more active than you have been of late. What would you like to do next? Any names out there you want to fight?
SL: To me, it doesn't really matter. I let my managers make those decisions for me; that's why I have them. I let my managers Cameron and Greg handle that for me, but if it was up to me, I would fight anybody in my weight that has a title and would want to make the fight.
PC: How soon would you like to get back in there?
SL: I would hope by the end of this year.
PC: You took a couple nice shots at the end. Are you okay?
SL: Yeah, everything is fine.
PC: Great fight Steven. I appreciate your time. Is there anything you want to say in closing?
SL: No, everything sounds good. Thanks!
