Saturday, Oct. 9th, I competed in the US Grappling Tournament in Oak Lawn, Illinois. I can't say that I was nervous at all. I just wanted to get in some mat time and experience to help me out with my MMA. In fact, the one thing I was nervous about was not knowing the point system or rules. I signed up for every division. I was in the 113-124.5 division. I competed in No-Gi, No-Gi Absolute, White Belt Gi and White Belt Gi Absolute. I ended up taking first in every division, except the Gi Absolute, where I took 2nd. I lost on points to a much larger girl, but learned a lot and had a blast.
I had 7 matches in all. 5 of my wins were submission wins; 4 by armbar. One of the armbar submissions was extra sweet. I was in mount position and took the triangle from top position and transitioned into an armbar. My other submission was a rear naked choke. And one match, I won on points and the other one I lost on points. The rounds were 5 minutes and back to back to back. I believe I was the only girl to enter every division.
I gained a lot of mat time and did a lot better than I anticipated. I'm used to doling with all men, which makes it difficult to track my progress. This tournament was a great test for me. I think I have found a new addiction. I plan on doing the next grappling tournament, which I believe is one month away.
My last 4 fights have fallen through. This keeps me active, and keeps me competing, without taking all those punches to the face...although I must admit, the tournament was 2 days ago and I've been sick as a dog (a lil bulldog) since the tournament. I don't even feel this sick after a fight. That's when you know you've put the work in. God, I wonder how they are feeling right now.
My goal in MMA has always been to be well-rounded and the best in every aspect of the game. Competing this weekend and doing so well really helped me to see just how possible this is. I have a lot to learn, a long ways to go...I'm only a white belt. I'm excited to continue learning and competing. This is only the beginning.
I guess the Lil Bulldog isn't just a striker after all...boooooyah!
