Sources close to the information have informed us that former undisputed jr. middleweight champion Winky Wright has pulled out of his scheduled April 9th clash with middleweight contender Matthew Macklin. The bout was set to be the co-main event of the Golden Boy Promotions "Action Heroes" pay-per-view card, headlined by a showdown between three-division world champion Erik Morales and jr. welterweight contender Marcos Maidana. It's unclear as to exactly why Wright is pulling out of the bout. FightHype initially received word that Wright suffered a hand injury during training, but rumors are circulating that he was also having a more difficult time than usual making the 160-pound weight limit despite still having 5 weeks to go before the bout. Whatever the reason, Wright will no longer be fighting on the card and Golden Boy Promotions is currently scrambling to find a replacement.
Wright (51-5-1, 25KOs) last fought in April of 2009 when he lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Paul Williams. Since that time, he has had one fight get canceled (a tune-up against Grady Brewer), underwent knee surgery, and has struggled to find anyone willing to give him an opportunity. After Golden Boy Promotions was finally able to secure him an opportunity against Macklin, one has to wonder if Wright will ever get another chance after pulling out of this bout.
