FightHype.com recently caught up with "The King" Spencer Fisher to discuss his anticipated rematch with Sam Stout, why this fight will be different and why the judges can stay at home!
PC: How is everything going man?
SF: I've been good; just getting ready for this fight of course.
PC: How has training for this fight been going so far?
SF: Great. Very good!
PC: Have you gone back and viewed the Hermes Franca fight and if so where did you feel you made your mistake?
SF: I thought I hurt him with a couple of body shots and I got overconfident. I didn't keep my angles and stood right in front of him. I knew to look for those haymakers and I just didn't see it.
PC: Win, lose or draw, you are one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC. Your first fight with Sam was a classic. Can we expect much of the same type of fight?
SF: Exactly the same. I expect
Sam is a tough fighter, but I fought Sam at his 100%. This time, he's going to get me at my 100%. I know he said he's not the same fighter and this, that and the other, but we have to go out there and fight.
PC: You did take the first fight on very quick notice (2 days) and had to cut some serious weight quickly. Did that directly affect any gameplan you had?
SF: Well, I don't want to take anything away from him. They called the decision and it was my fault that it went to a decision. Had I gone out there and finished the fight, it wouldn't have turned out that way. I never believe in decisions. I hardly ever go to one. I think this time, if I go out there and fight to the best of my ability, it won't go to the cards.
PC: I spoke with Shawn Tompkins, his trainer, and he said, "The only difference in this fight is that they'll put you to sleep this time." What do you have to say in response to that?
SF: Talk is cheap. He could have all the cheerleaders he wants. He knows that we have to fight. It doesn't do me a whole lot of good to try and cheerlead myself up because we have to fight. As long as he comes to fight and doesn't try to hit and run from me, then one of us will be going to sleep and it won't be me.
PC: What do you think the key will be in this fight to separate the two of you?
SF: I'll be in great shape. I'll be ready to go. I think I'm just better rounded in everything than he is. He is a standup fighter. He's a better striker on paper, but if people watch that first fight, I was kicking his ass in that first round and then I got tired. He could say whatever he wants to about how he is better in this and better in that, but he hit me a whole lot in that third round because I was gassed and nothing ever hurt me.
PC: How is making 155 pounds this time around for you? Are you on target?
SF: Yeah. I'm like 10 pounds over right now.
PC: You guys have another Miletich fighter making his UFC debut at Ultimate Fight Night on June 12th named Jason Black. What can we expect from him?
SF: (laughing) Well, have you seen what his motto is? Go like hell! That's exactly how he is. He is one of the toughest and hardest working guys in our gym.
PC: What did you think of UFC 71?
SF: I thought it was great. I was wrong on a lot of the outcomes, but I was very happy with the card and I'm sure Dana was as well. The UFC never puts on boring fights.
PC: What is your take on the whole boxing vs. MMA debate?
SF: I think that boxers should stick to their sport, otherwise it would be MMA. They can't talk it unless they get in there. You see what happened to the guys that have tried to cross over. Unless they are well rounded, because that's what it's called, mixed martial arts, so unless they're well rounded, they should stay inside a squared circle.
PC: Good luck on the 12th. As always, it's a pleasure speaking with you. Is there anything you want to say in closing?
SF: Man, you just got me motivated. I like them saying they're going to put me to sleep. I'm getting ready to go work out so I'm ready. I just want to appreciate all my fans and all my sponsors as well. Tapout and all of those guys.
