Early this morning, former jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan took to Twitter to once again voice his frustrations regarding a potential clash with undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather. "FM is full of shit. Just like 'my next opponent' Poll," he wrote in response to Floyd Mayweather's recent guarantee of a fight provided Khan gets past Mayweather's "little brother", former welterweight champion Adrien Broner, on the undercard of his upcoming May 3 clash with WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana. The irony is that it was Khan himself who first publicly made the request of Mayweather, addressing him on Twitter with the message: "@FloydMayweather, tell @AdrienBroner to fight me on your card and when I beat him, you fight me next."
Not long after Khan posted his request, Mayweather retweeted it, seemingly agreeing with the idea before telling FightHype.com, "I think Amir Khan should face Adrien Broner. I think that'll be a good matchup." The next day, Mayweather took it a step further by directly responding to Khan with his own message: "I don't have an easy fight on May 3, 2014, so I can't over look @ChinoMaidana but @AmirKingKhan, if you and @AdrienBroner end up fighting ... each other on my show and you win (which you won't)... I'll fight you." It's the first time Mayweather has ever publicly guaranteed a fighter the opportunity to face him when he's already scheduled to face another opponent.
For whatever reason, however, it seems like Khan is now backpedaling, claiming that it's Mayweather who is "full of shit" despite the fact that he officially went on record and agreed to the request of the Bolton native. It's unclear as to why Khan would now respond in such a manner after seemingly getting the answer that he wanted. It begs the question, was Khan simply bluffing about his willingness to fight Broner? After all, this is the same man who claimed to have sparred with super middleweight king Andre Ward, taking his best punches in the process, only to have that story debunked by Ward himself, who told FightHype's Michelle Rosado, "Me and Khan never sparred. Yea, didn't read what he said, but we've never been in the ring together."
Khan also claimed to have signed a finalized fight contract to face Mayweather on May 3, a notion that Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, Showtime Sports Executive Vice President Stephen Espinoza, and Mayweather himself all denied. Now that Mayweather has officially revealed that Marcos Maidana will be his opponent on May 3, clearly whatever it was that Khan claimed to have signed was not a binding contract that guaranteed him a Mayweather fight.
Ever since Khan made the suggestion that he would be willing to face Adrien Broner, the former welterweight champion, Broner, has been active on his own Twitter page, asking his fans if they wanted to see him fight Khan next; even going so far as to retweet fan-made posters of himself and Khan fighting each other on the May 3 undercard. On the other hand, Khan appears to be shying away from a fight that he himself proposed. In fact, according to his latest tweet, Khan will be returning to the UK, where he plans on continuing his training for an opponent, a date, and a venue that has yet to be determined.
So with all parties seemingly on board with Amir Khan's request to face Broner on the May 3 undercard provided he's guaranteed a shot at Mayweather, the question is, who's really full of shit? Is it the people who are trying to make the fight a reality or the people who appear to be going in a different direction?
